The three of us took a cab to Woldenberg Park and cut through toward the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. I could smell the Mississippi River in the air as we scurried down the waterfront walkways until we hit the shadowed entry staircase to the aquarium. I had been in the damned place countless times and hadn’t even realized who was under my nose all this time. It just goes to show you how vast the supernatural universe was.

Predictably, the aquarium’s glass entry doors were locked tight. I began to pound and hammer my fists on its sturdy windows, using my considerable demon strength to cause a ruckus. The place undoubtedly had an alarm system, and I just hoped I didn’t trip it before I caught the attention of a night watchman.

“What are you doing?” Eff hissed.

I snapped an impatient look at him. “He works night security. I need him to notice us.”

Eff gripped my wrist before I could punch the glass again. “And what if there’s more than one of them on duty?”

I scoffed. “What did you think we were going to do? Slip a note under the door?”

A flashlight beam arched over the interior tile, and my heart leapt into my throat. I flattened my hand across the glass and beat against it even faster. The flashlight beam bobbed and hurried its pace until a large man finally rounded the corner.

He was gigantic. Not gigantic and muscle-bound like War, but large and barrel-chested like a human grizzly bear. He had a jolly, round face with a bulbous nose and ginger-colored mutton chops. The buttons on his security uniform seemed like they were ready to burst at any moment.

His pleasant face darkened as he saw me, and I prepared myself for a monumental chewing-out.

Instead, he yanked out the access badge he had attached by a cord on his hip and opened the door immediately. Now that he was up close, I barely came up to his powerful chest. The three of us backed up enough to let him open the door, and he ushered us inside with a hand the size of an end table.

His voice was slightly lilting, almost Norwegian. “If you think I don’t know who you three are, then you’ve already underestimated me. I’m not a fool.”

“Jonah?” I questioned hesitantly.

Jonah sighed. “Who else would I be, hmm? Santa Claus?”

Death eyed Jonah’s large frame and abundant facial hair. “I-I mean… you’re not not Santa.”

Jonah rolled his eyes and gestured for us to follow him. “Come on, take a walk with me. I’d rather talk among the creatures than here in this cold lobby.”

We followed him through a dim hallway, then into one of the aquarium’s many tank-lined passages. Blue and green shimmers from the water danced all over the walls and floors, and the air was sharp with the smell of salt, fish, and animals. The three of us craned our necks and took in the sights as we followed Jonah into the belly of the aquarium.

“Should we even be in here?” Eff finally asked nervously.
